I swear, I literally just finished the rough first draft of my fourth book (the 2nd in the A Web of Lies trilogy) at just over 85.000 words. What a milestone!
One thing to know about me as an author is that I’m an underwriter. That means I usually have to add words instead of deleting them (I do that, too, but not often). My first drafts consist of all the scenes that flow out of me easily and the scenes I have firm ideas for. The parts I don’t write during this draft, are parts that do not ‘click’ yet. I have a vague idea of what needs to happen, and I have an overall sense/feeling of what I want those scenes to be, but there was no inspiration yet. I skip those sorts of scenes during the first draft and usually color them in during the revision process.
So, there are many words to add to this first draft before it starts resembling the end product (or, as you will, the ‘full story’). I usually have to adjust some character development or add descriptions. Most of the dialogue is often there, funnily enough. Now that I think about it, I realize I really love writing dialogue. Ha!
I’m taking a small break from this novel to have fresh eyes once I start editing, which will be within the next couple of weeks!
